The History Of The Glendevon Seventh-Day Adventist Church |
|
Following the Lord’s command, a group of members from the Montego Bay Seventh Day Adventist Church responded to the impression of the Holy Spirit and saw the great need of sharing the gospel with the people of the Glendevon community. Thus, the Glendevon SDA Company was founded in the year 1955, when as a Branch Sabbath School a group of 17 members from the Montego Bay SDA Church began worshipping together in the community.
A small bamboo tabernacle was erected on the property of Mr. Spence’s shop, a member of the community. Brother Housen and Sister Boreland led out in its activities. The worship activities discontinued for a short period and the services later resumed and continued at the veranda of Bro Reid’s home, an active member of the group who resided at Johnson Hill. As the company grew a shed was constructed as an attachment to the veranda, to house the young church. The veranda was then used as the rostrum. Bro. Reid took over the leading responsibilities of the Branch Sabbath School.
Soon after the starting of this Branch Sabbath School some vibrant Seventh Day Adventists came to live in the community and joined with the group. These were Bro. Robinson, Bro. Doneyghan and Bro. V. Kirton and they assisted in providing leadership. By 1959 Pastor Harold Fletcher was assigned by the Conference to shepherd this little flock. At that time there were no roads in the community of Glendevon. Nevertheless, there was a main track which everyone had to travel on. Following the Holy Spirit’s conviction, Mrs. Doris Flemming and others started visiting the little shed at Bro. Reid’s home in early 1962. She was among the group of newly baptized members in that same year at the Montego Bay Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was baptised by Pastor J.C. Palmer who was the pastor there.
Soon after Sister Flemming’s baptism, she decided to give the plot of land on which the church is now built, for the construction of a church. As a result, the church was removed from Bro. Reid’s home to its 123 Sun Valley Road location, where a zinc structure was erected. The Lord continued to bless the Branch Sabbath School and in 1963, it became an organized Sabbath School. That year was quite significant, as it was the 100th anniversary of the organization of the General Conference of SDA. At the time, Nurse Scott, a faithful Sister in Christ who resided in Albion, was called upon to serve as the Superintendent of the Sabbath School. Welfare meetings were also held at her home with Sister B. Vernon and Sis. Santeta Kerr (Orlando Kerr’s mother) as the Dorcas leaders.
In the year 1964, the Glendevon SDA Church was transformed into an organized church with 56 members, under the leadership of Pastor J.C. Palmer. Bro. Bernal Ambersley became the first elder of this body of believers. The work has only just begun and so a few months later, Pastor Palmer launched out in an evangelistic effort, at the end of which 19 persons were won to the Advent truth. Pastor Palmer was later transferred from the district of churches and Pastor N.S. Frazer was assigned as pastor. In 1968 Pastor K.G. Samuels pastored the church and laid the foundation for construction of a permanent structure. He served the church for four (4) years. However, the church building actually started when Pastor F. L. Broomfield pastored the church. The building was completed under the leadership of Pastor Aston D. Parchment and was dedicated to the glory of God, to expand his kingdom and to serve the community, on December 8, 1985.
Today the Glendevon Seventh Day Adventist Church stands as a monument and beacon of hope in the community and under God, has been a haven for hundreds of lives that might have otherwise been wrecked, hadn’t it been for her faithful witness and service.
